Hensarling Responds to Supreme Court Decision on Marriage
WASHINGTON—U.S. Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges.
“The decisions by the Supreme Court this week are an assault on our Constitution and represent the height of judicial activism. Marriage – which is never mentioned in the Constitution – is a profound question that must be decided by the people and their elected representatives, not unelected and unaccountable judges. The principles of the rule of law, federalism, and religious liberty are fundamental to American society. As a matter of faith, I believe in traditional marriage between one man and one woman. As a matter of faith, I also believe that all men are created by God and worthy of love and respect, even when they disagree. In light of this decision, we must ensure that we protect religious freedom and conscience.”
