Hensarling Statement on House Speaker Vote
WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, released the following statement on today's vote for Speaker of the House.
“In November, the American people elected a conservative Republican majority to work on their behalf to solve the many problems and challenges we face – including stopping executive overreach, especially on immigration; halting Obamacare and replacing it with patient-centered reforms; reforming our broken tax code; and putting an end to cronyism and the Washington insider economy. Following that election, I said that I would support the Speaker candidate who was elected by the House Republican Conference in November. John Boehner – who ran unopposed at that time – was chosen by Republicans to be that person. While I followed through on my commitment today, never during my time in Congress have I ever hesitated to challenge our leadership in order to defend conservative principles—and I won’t stop now. Regardless of who the Speaker is, I expect my colleagues and our leadership to join together to do the job the American people sent us here to do.”
